Glasses

It’s a good day when both kids come home from school with their glasses.

Let’s just say that today was NOT a good day.

The level of playground stomp-age that the glasses encountered today was utterly unmentionable.  (It may even be deliberate, but I’m assured that it was just a playground collision—it looks like the result of a collision with a military tank, or herd of wildabeasts).

But would you believe I was able to get a replacement pair of glasses ordered with ZERO cost out of pocket to me?

Here is my “almost free” eyeglasses hack.

I had my daughter’s eyeglasses prescription stashed in my Evernote account, so I pulled that out, and ordered a pair of lenses on www.eyebuydirect.com.  We’ve used them for glasses before, and are very comfortable with their quality.

We ordered a pair of cute pink glasses (similar to the green ones above) that were marked down to $17.98, and applied $4 in rewards and a discount code from RetailMeNot.com, to get the total price with shipping and anti-scratch coating, lenses and frames down to $17.25, which I paid with my Flexible Benefits Account, a benefit from my husband’s workplace–we put in the family maximum of $2,500, which will work out to be exactly $23 too much by the end of the year.  It’s a use-it-or-loose-it plan, so now I just have to work out how to spend the remaining $5.75 to break even for the year.

Would you like to try EyeBuyDirect?  Here’s a discount code for you to try–it should give you a  5% discount on any order.  ” IF1UBSFCZC

You’ll need to have your eyeglasses prescription, as well as the PD measurements (your optometrist can provide you with this, sometimes for a small charge).

The glasses take about two weeks to arrive–and if you make a mistake in ordering (we once ordered our daughter’s glasses WAY too big) you send the glasses back and they’re recycled to a charity organization and they re-cut them properly.

The customer service really is fantastic. Give the coupon code a try–it also works for non-Rx sunglasses–at great values!

PS–Want another way to save on glasses?  I recently took in a favorite pair of my frames from my stash of old glasses, and had new lenses cut to my new prescription at the local optometrist.  Yes, it was more expensive than EyeBuyDirect, but I had my same frames that I already knew I loved–and the lenses were ready much faster–it was also an eligible expense for our Flexible Benefits Account. Total FBA expense $129.00, total out-of-pocket expense was $0.
